Dubs’ Kilkenny mulling AFL options

Dublin's Ciarán Kilkenny is said to be undecided on a move to either Carlton or Hawthorn.

Dublin footballer Ciarán Kilkenny is still “50/50” over whether or not to take up the offer of moving to the AFL, a source close to the player has told the Irish Echo.

Kilkenny headed to Melbourne to visit Hawthorn shortly after Dublin’s exit from the Championship in mid-September, after which speculation increased that he would make the move to Australia.

Dublin teammate Denis Bastick also suggested in a recent interview that Kilkenny might make the switch to the oval ball game, but the former All-Ireland winning Under-21 star is still yet to make a call on whether to head to either Carlton, who have been tracking the player for over 18 months, or Hawthorn, on an international rookie contract.

Having just begun an arts degree in UCD, the Castleknock club man is expected to attempt to play both football and hurling for the Dubs next year, should he decide to stay put.

However, he will not be able to play Sigerson Cup colleges football or Fitzgibbon Cup hurling for the Belfield outfit this year because of a new rule which prevents first year students from playing senior grade GAA.

The likely appointment of Jim Gavin as Pat Gilroy’s successor in the Dublin senior football post may prove another telling factor and could tip the balance as the Blanchardstown man managed Kilkenny’s All-Ireland winning under-21 team.

Kilkenny is expected to make his choice known in mid-October.
